"Soulless" is the
3rd full-length studio album by Swedish Death Metal legends GRAVE. It is a landmark release that saw the band pivoting away from the sheer speed of their early work toward a massive, mid-paced, and groove-heavy sound that redefined their identity.
Moving away from the blast-beat intensity of
"Into The Grave," this album leans into
"sledgehammer" riffs. It trades chaotic velocity for a crushing, rhythmic weight, often compared to the "Death 'n' Roll" transition made by their peers in
Entombed.
Recorded at the legendary
Sunlight Studio with producer
Tomas Skogsberg, the album features a cleaner, more focused production than its predecessors while maintaining that iconic, gritty Swedish guitar buzz.
This was the final album to feature
Jörgen Sandström(who later joined Entombed). His delivery here is more intelligible and rhythmic, opting for a menacing, authoritative shout over deep, guttural gurgles.
The album’s tone is notably cold and
"soulless," moving from classic gore toward themes of psychological darkness, social decay, and anti-religious bitterness. --
