Following their highly experimental
Black Meddle series,
NACHTMYSTIUM returned on
July 30th, 2012
with
"Silencing Machine." This album is widely viewed as a
"return to form" that successfully bridged the gap between the band's psychedelic ambitions and their gritty, industrial-tinged Black Metal roots.
While the Black Meddle albums leaned heavily into Pink Floyd-esque Psych-Rock and Post-Punk, "Silencing Machine" is significantly more aggressive, cold, and claustrophobic.
Thanks to
Sanford Parker’s production and synth work, the album is layered with
"mechanical" textures, white noise, and pulsing electronics that give it a dystopian,
"urban decay" feel.
The tracks are generally longer and more repetitive than previous efforts, aiming for an
"asphyxiating" hypnotic effect rather than the catchy grooves found on
Addicts.
Blake Judd’s vocals are notably more distorted and buried in the mix compared to earlier records, enhancing the
"machine-like" quality of the music contained within the
Silencing Machine. --
