Released in 2022 via Ancient Temple Recordings, "13th Moon" marks the triumphant return of Moncton, New Brunswick’s Cult Black Metal outfit, FUNERAL FOG. Arriving 15 years after their previous full-length, this album finds the band reclaiming their throne in the Canadian Underground with a sound that is as ancient as it is abrasive.
The album is a stark rejection of modern, overly polished Black Metal. It leans heavily into the "second wave" aesthetic—think cold, biting guitar tones and a primitive, cavernous production that feels like it was unearthed from a frozen tomb.
While the band can deliver blistering speed, they excel at mid-paced, hypnotic passages that evoke a sense of "mystical morbidity." The songs are structured to build suspense, utilizing eerie, echoing vocal sneers and stark melodies.
Recorded at Bloodmoon Studios in their hometown of Moncton, the record carries an organic, "Maritime" grit. It captures the raw energy of a band that famously played only one live show—in the woods—before their long hiatus.
