For fans of the avant-garde and the "extreme" end of drone, PENTEMPLE is a legendary one-off collaboration that feels more like a ritualistic endurance test than a standard live album. Released via Southern Lord, this record documents a chaotic, improvisational performance from May 2007 at The Toff in Town in Melbourne, Australia.
This project was born when the touring members of Sunn O))) invited Sin Nanna (the visionary behind the lo-fi Black Metal project STRIBORG) to join them on stage. The results were overhauled and edited by Oren Ambarchi to be as "brutal as possible."
Stephen O’Malley (SOMA) & Greg Anderson (The Lord): Providing the tectonic, earth-shaking drone foundations.
Attila Csihar (Mayhem): Delivering his signature eerie, shamanic vocal performance.
Sin Nanna (Striborg): Providing chaotic live drums and "delay voice." This was notable as it was one of the first times Sunn O))) performed with a live drummer.
Oren Ambarchi: Handling additional guitar, synth, and the final "vicious" mix.
The label famously described this as a "Blackened Low-End Psychedelic War," and it lives up to the name. It moves away from the pure, static drone of typical Sunn O))) and into a territory of Free-Improvised Black Metal.
