Vocalist Randy Blythe has described the album as a direct response to the "ongoing and rapid breakdown of the social contract," particularly within the American landscape. Recording took place across multiple locations, including Mark Morton's home studio and the iconic Total Access Recording in California, which provided a raw, classic aesthetic.
